Making a Difference in the Southwest

Over the past nine years the Foundation's mission has been "to raise, administer and disburse funds to improve the quality of health care for the people of Southwest Saskatchewan." With small beginnings the Foundation has grown into an operation that administers hundreds of thousands of dollars for equipment purchases for facilities across Southwest Saskatchewan every year.

Equipment has been purchased for every facility in the Region with more items currently approved. Your donations are going to work to improve the quality of your healthcare and make each facility the best of its kind in the province.

    Imagine That!

We often think of the word Legacy as one of those grand gestures, made by wealthy citizens of distinction. However, in reality creating a legacy is more often accomplished by those of moderate means for a variety of reasons.

For some the tax advantages either now or in future for their estate will prove beneficial. "Rather a charity than more taxes to the government right?" For others, having an endowment or project that will carry their name or the name of their family for generations is the inspiration behind the investment. Others truly want to create a better situation for those who will follow by giving back to their community. All of the above reasons can inspire people to leave a legacy.

While there are great advantages to donating for the donor and the charity, many people still do not contribute. Not because they do not want to, but rather because they may not know how to go about it, or because they feel they will have time to make the contribution in future.

There are two key elements to determining when, what product and how much to invest in a Legacy. Planned Giving programs provide a variety of choices for donors. Proper advice from a qualified financial advisor, legal advisor or accountant, can ensure you achieve the results you want while receiving the proper benefit. Notifying the charity is the second key element. The charity can best advise you, what is available through their organization and what benefits are available with each program. What is equally important is that they understand exactly what you want done with the funds and are able to meet your expectations. Charities cannot ethically accept funds if they cannot meet the donor's wishes. A Code of Ethics governs many charities, like the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation.

I am sure we all would like to leave the world a better place. You might be surprised to learn that the $10,000 you thought you could leave to your favorite charity could instead set up a $50,000, family named endowment that would support needs for generations to come. Imagine that!

    Foundation Welcomes Newcomers

On Jan 31st, 2008 the Foundation's Recruitment and Retention Committee hosted a come and go for some newcomers to our community. The purpose of Recruitment and Retention is to make the move to Swift Current for Physicians and their families as pleasant as possible. The Foundation held a come and go which allowed physicians wives to network and met other women going through the same experiences. Foundation volunteers were on hand to introduce themselves and help make the transition into the community easier for the families.

Anne Moola, member of the Foundation Board and the Recruitment and Retention committee, said that the afternoon was very enjoyable for everyone. The women were able to share their experiences and opinions of what is required when moving to a new city. The event had a good turn out with around 16 people attending. Some of the women that attended were from Africa, India, Pakistan and other parts of Canada.

The Recruitment and Retention committee hopes to hold more functions like this one to ensure new families feel welcome and fit into our community.

    Sister Spreads her Generosity

The Rotary House has received numerous donations over the past year, big and small. One of those donations has served a special purpose making the hostel feel a little more like home. Sister Ida Chaperon of the Sisters of Notre Dame in Ponteix has spent countless hours creating afghans for the hostel rooms. They provide extra comfort for people that are finding a place to stay while receiving treatment or visiting friends and relatives who are in the hospital. We want to thank Sister Ida Chaperon for her efforts and generosity.

    Thank You!

We want to thank our volunteers that have contributed their time and energy to make all that we have done here at the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation a success. We have many volunteers donate their time and energy to every project, building Habitat for Healthcare, fundraising activities, and running our gift shop.

    Volunteer Highlight

Garth Wightman has been a volunteer in our Gift Shop at the Cypress Regional Hospital since September 2007. He is recently retired from owning and operating A&W and wanted to give something back to his community. He found our ad in the paper and responded to our call for volunteers. He says it's, "kind of fun to work in the gift shop" and says he enjoys working with the customers. We appreciate Garths contributions along with all of our other volunteers.

    More Volunteers Needed
